WHAT DO WE WORK ON EVERYDAY?
Each day, we work on these three things:
- education (through bell work, independent reading, and Reading Plus)
- community (through our routines and bell work)
- self-care (through our classroom routines and expectations and bell work)
WHAT IS READING PLUS?
Holman Middle School uses the Reading Plus Program in remedial reading classes.
Students will work on the program daily, working towards both long and short term goals. Each week, they will work one-on-one with me on targeted skills. These targeted skills come from that data collected within the program. Reading Plus works to develop the three areas needed to be a successful reader - comprehension (understanding what you read), vocabulary (knowing the words you read), and fluency (how well you read the words).
Reading Plus is adaptive, which means that the computer program responds to student successes. After an initial assessment, the program places each student on their own vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension levels. Your student might be on Level C for vocabulary, Level G for comprehension, and not need fluency work at all. The student in the next desk might be on Level D for both vocabulary and comprehension, and Level C for fluency. This means your student is working at their level each and every day.

WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE?
Each day is divided into three sections.

- Reading Plus - students work on the Reading Plus program, and I do conferencing and small group work.
- Independent Reading - students spend 15 minutes reading a book of their choice (this is optional, if students are finished with Reading Plus)
